Number 5

In keeping with our society's obsession with winning, the NHL has done away with ties. No longer can two teams leave the ice with a point each, signifying a draw, that neither team came away with the advantage that led to victory. Instead, after overtime, we get treated to a shootout, taking the team concept completely out of the contest. The NHL is in deep trouble financially, so the shootout is a way to try to generate some interest. It won't work.

I see that my purest views are in the minority.
